On June 30, 2017, NY Times reported that a disabled rights activist, Mr. Kijima, who is partly paralyzed, was told by a Japanese airline, Vanilla Air that he could not board as it lacked wheel-chair accessible boarding ramps or elevators. Mr. Kijima, bound to a wheelchair (he is paralyzed from the waist down due to a rugby accident as a teenager), then crawled one step at a time to be finally seated on the plane. This episode drew significant public attention and Vanilla Air has since apologized and ordered electric wheelchair lifts for its planes which immediately went into service.
