BlindSquare, built by Finland-based developer Ilkka Pirttimaa is the world’s most widely used accessible GPS-app developed for the blind, deafblind and partially sighted. It is utilized by more than 60,000 people in 186 countries, and is available in 26 languages, the app utilizes Open Street Map and Foursquare data to help people who are visually impaired navigate the streets and communities around them.
It determines users locations and provides audio information about places per user’s interests. Users shake their devices to hear their current location and information about surrounding attractions, travel progress and can pin their location at anytime to use the information later.
Blindsquare also works with other apps such as Uber so users can call an Uber without attempting to use another application. It can connect to Braille displays that can be used in place of the speech synthesizer.
