Justice Chandrachud celebrated his swearing-in ceremony with his partner Kalpana Das and two foster daughters Mahi and Priyanka. He takes oath as the 50th CJI of India today.
A graduate of Mathematics and Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, he went on to pursue a career in law. He obtained a Bachelor of Laws from Delhi University and a Masters of Laws from Harvard Law School. Justice Chandrachud also completed a Doctorate of Juridical Science from Harvard in 1986, which focused on the various aspects of affirmative legal action.
He earlier served as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from October 31, 2013 to May 12, 2016. He was a judge at the Bombay High Court from March 29, 2000 until his appointment as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
He was designated as a senior advocate by the Bombay High Court in June 1998 and became Additional Solicitor General in the same year till his appointment as a judge. He practised law at the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court and was a visiting professor of comparative Constitutional law at the University of Mumbai.
For the past eight years, Justice Chandrachud has been serving as a Supreme Court judge.Justice DY Chandrachud joined Supreme Court in 2016 and has been a part of about 220 cases and verdicts. The 63-years-old judge is also the son of longest serving Chief Justice Of India, Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud.
